“In America today, if your sensibilities are offended by something that has happened, you get an enormous amount of credibility and are taken very seriously.”
- Brit Hume
It is amazingly ironic what offends some people in our country today. How is it that our values system could be so out of whack that some people would be offended when our law officials attempt to bring a convicted child rapist to justice or when two young people expose tax fraud and prostitution. Its as if the law and morality are trivial at best and offensive at worst. This is a sad state of affairs.
To take this a step further, consider what has happened to the cheer-leading squad at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. In an effort to raise the spirits of their football team and the fans in the stands, the cheerleaders have used Bible verses on some of their signs. This is a practice that has gone on for quite some time until just recently when (go figure) someone got offended. What had served as a great source of wisdom and inspiration has now been scrapped because someones feelings got hurt. The logic being used to take away the free speech rights of these young ladies is that it “obviously” violates the separation of church and state.
So that’s the magic bullet. If something is moral, or especially Judeo-Christian and you don’t like it, just get offended and noisy. Chances are all authorities will cave to your wishes and run for cover; that is unless you are offended at pornography, or blasphemy, or illicit drug use. It must be nice to be in that privileged class that always gets what it wants in this “culture of offendedness”.
“I am concerned for the security of our great nation; not so much because of any threat from without, but because of the insidious forces working from within.”
- General Douglas MacArthur
There is a grave threat to our republic at work now behind the scenes. This force has been active ever since the first human being set foot upon our shore. This force is not some great conspiracy. It is not a cabal conducted by Freemasons or the “Illuminati”. The real source that threatens our liberty and security is something that every American, regardless of political affiliation, struggles with every day. Our greatest enemy is sin and ignorance of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
I love to watch the discovery channel and the history channel on TV. I am a history geek and always have been. What irritates me is when these channels continually show programs that allude to some great conspiracy that is working behind the scenes to take control of the world. While such programs may be entertaining they distract from the truth.
If the Bible is true, there will come a world order headed by a charismatic leader who will dominate the political landscape. This, however, is not a secret or a conspiracy and in that sense is not “new”. It has been predicted since the 1st Century when it was recorded by John the Apostle and others. It has been studied discussed and even been the subject of hundreds of books and many movies.
If we are to prepare for the reality and not be distracted by the fantasy, we must deal with the issue of sin. Sin is what will eventually lead to this evil regime and the only way one can overcome sin is through the gospel. If you are waiting for a discovery channel expose to reveal this, you may be waiting a long time. You can however turn to a very old source that states:
“…if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.””
- Romans 10:9-11
There is no new world order only an old sinful one who will only be made right through the love of Jesus Christ. What world order are you hoping for?
“Bad men cannot make good citzens. It is when a people forget God that tyrants forge their chains. A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom. No free government, or the blessings of liberty, can be preserved to any people but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality, and virtue; and by a frequent recurrence to fundamental principals.”
- Patrick Henry
Threats to the security of the United States of America abound. Muslim extremist terrorism, North Korean communism, and Second and third world dictatorships would all love to see America go away. Yet with all of the dangers to our Republic, the greatest danger may very well be of our own making.
America is in grave danger of losing its liberty because of the deterioration of its faith. A study published by Barry Kosmin and Ariela Keysar at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut purports some startling trends. According to their findings, in 2008 15% of the population of the United States claim no faith affiliation up from 8.2% in 1990. Also, 27% of Americans do not expect any faith based funeral when they die. The trend is definitely in favor of an increasingly uncommitted, secular electorate.
The long term effects of this shift of faith do not bode well. A cursory study of western European nations that have embraced secularism demonstrates an equal embracing of socialism. It is an unstated axiom that a secular state doesn’t eschew worship it just transfers its worship from God to the state. If one is inclined to believed that man was created by God to worship God, when God is supplanted then any other god (including the state) will have to do.
So what is the greatest threat to liberty? The answer to this question may be subject to debate, but history makes it abundantly clear that where God is honored and the gospel is received there exists a free people indeed.
“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is beauty, admire it… Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it.”
- Mother Teresa
This grand discussion on health care that we are having has been quite revealing. It has shown us where our passions are and where they should be but aren’t. I am speaking specifically of defending the value of life.
I have noticed a couple of headlines that would be worthy of your consideration. This first article deals with the idea of physician assisted suicide. It is troubling to hear what some death merchants are peddling in both Europe and the USA. Have a look at this:
Greying Britain Looks To Assisted Suicide Reform
Another article that caught my attention deals with parents choosing to abort down syndrome diagnosed babies. The development of health care technology has improved to allow for diagnosis of downs syndrome in the womb. It is deplorable to see how this has dramatically increased the number of abortions. Here is the article:
Will Down Syndrome Disappear?
We need to be very careful as we discuss health care reform how it will affect those in our society who have no voice. It is easy for us to talk about what is front of us everyday or at least what shows up on the nightly news. Let’s not forget those who deserve to be protected regardless of their perceived value to society.
